Sands sees no oversupply of hotels in Cotai

Tue, 11th Apr 2017

There is no oversupply of hotel rooms in Cotai, Sands China Senior Vice President Marketing and Brand Management Ruth Boston said on Monday, who is of the view that more developments in Cotai are attracting more visitors.
Boston spoke to reporters after launching a raft of promotions and activities to mark the 5th anniversary of Sands Cotai Central, which comprises the four hotel brands St Regis, Holiday Inn, Conrad, and Sheraton.
According to Boston, Sands Cotai Central has welcomed over 84 million visitors since it first opened in 2012 and has brought in families as new types of visitors to Macau.
Five years on and with new hotels opening recently and more slated to open next year in Cotai, Boston said that there was no oversupply of hotel rooms, rather “the more the better”.
“I think that the more brands that are open, including our competitors, the better Macau is, it brings in more visitations, so more people come because there are more things to do,” said Boston, adding it was natural that hotels slash rates when there are more competitors, insisting that competition is healthy.
According to hospitality industry figures, there are currently about 22,800 hotel rooms in Cotai, with about 3,000 more to be added when MGM Cotai and Grand Lisboa Palace open next year.
“Competition does heat up but we’re very comfortable with the way we’re performing and our properties are running very well. So at this point in time, I think competition is healthy and we’re happy that there are more people coming to Macau,” Boston said.
